Yucca and saponins — less ammonia in the house
Ammonia from droppings spoils the air in the house, irritates the birds’ airways and burns their feet. Extract of the Yucca schidigera plant and the saponins it contains help cut the amount of ammonia rising from the manure. We explain how it works, in which forms it’s used and what the studies really show — and what isn’t worth promising.

Yucca schidigera is a desert plant from which an extract rich in saponins is obtained — natural compounds with cleansing and binding properties. In poultry nutrition they are used mainly to cut the amount of ammonia escaping from the manure. Less ammonia means cleaner air in the house, less airway irritation and fewer foot problems. It’s an additive that ties two things together at once: feeding the bird and the state of its environment.
How do yucca and saponins cut ammonia?
Ammonia forms from the breakdown of nitrogen in droppings. Saponins from yucca act in two ways: some bind ammonia directly, while others affect gut enzymes and microflora so that there is less nitrogen in the manure. The result is a lower ammonia concentration in the air and often drier litter. Review studies show the effect can be clear, but it depends on dose, form and house conditions — it’s support, not a substitute for good ventilation and litter management.
Yucca and saponins in house practice
Yucca is no magic — it works best combined with ventilation, dry litter and well-balanced feed.
Binding ammonia
Saponins and other components of yucca extract can bind ammonia before it escapes from the manure. As a result there is less of it in the house air. This helps especially when ventilation is limited, for example in winter, though it will never replace effective air exchange.
Better air and airway health
Ammonia irritates the mucous membranes of the birds’ eyes and airways. Lowering its concentration means less sneezing, tearing and irritation, and the respiratory system copes better with daily load. Cleaner air also makes work in the house more comfortable for the staff.
Foot and litter condition
High ammonia and wet, caked litter burn the feet and favour footpad dermatitis. By cutting ammonia and supporting drier manure, yucca helps keep feet in better condition. It’s one of the elements that, together with good litter, affect flock welfare.
Digestion support
Saponins can affect gut function and the use of feed nutrients, which translates into less undigested nitrogen in the droppings. Less nitrogen in the manure means in turn less raw material from which ammonia forms. The effects vary and depend on feed composition and dose.
Forms: feed, water, litter
Yucca extract comes as a feed additive (powder, granulate), a drinking-water preparation and products scattered or sprayed onto the litter. The choice of form depends on whether you want to act through the bird’s gut or directly on the manure. The two routes are often combined.
Status and safety
Many yucca products are registered as feed additives in the European Union — it’s worth checking a given preparation in the EU additives register. Always use it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations on dose and method of administration. A natural origin doesn’t excuse you from following the instructions.
Yucca and saponins step by step
- 1
Measure the ammonia problem first
Before reaching for an additive, check what the ammonia in your house really looks like — ideally with a meter at bird level. If the concentration spikes, start with ventilation and litter, since they have the biggest impact. Yucca makes sense as support once the basics are in order.
- 2
Choose a registered preparation
Reach for yucca products registered as feed additives — you can check them in the EU feed additives register. Look at the saponin content and the intended use (poultry, broilers). Avoid products with no clear composition or dosing declaration.
- 3
Match the form to the goal
If you want to support digestion and cut nitrogen at the source, choose a feed or water additive. If you mainly need a quick drop in ammonia from manure already in place, reach for a litter product. The two routes can be combined while watching the total dose.
- 4
Stick to the manufacturer’s dose
Use exactly the dose and method of administration the manufacturer states. More doesn’t mean better — overdosing raises cost without extra benefit and sometimes upsets feed palatability. Note the dose and the start date so you can compare the effect later.
- 5
Don’t skip ventilation and litter
Yucca works as an additive, not a substitute for good management. Keep ventilation effective, the litter dry and loose and the stocking right, because they decide how much ammonia forms at all. The additive adds to this but won’t fix basic neglect.
- 6
Watch the effect: air, feet, litter
After introducing the additive, see whether the sensed and measured ammonia drops, whether the litter is drier and how the birds’ feet look. Less eye and airway irritation is a good sign. If you see no difference, check the dose, the form and — above all — ventilation before deciding the additive doesn’t work.
Frequently asked questions about yucca and saponins
Does yucca really lower ammonia in the house?add
Review studies indicate that Yucca schidigera extract and the saponins it contains can cut ammonia escaping from manure, improving air quality. The scale of the effect, however, depends on dose, form and house conditions. It’s real support but not a miracle cure — without effective ventilation and dry litter, the additive alone won’t solve the problem.
In which form is yucca best given?add
It depends on the goal. To support digestion and cut nitrogen at the source, a feed or drinking-water additive is used. For a quick drop in ammonia from manure already in place, a product scattered or sprayed onto the litter works better. The two routes can be combined while keeping the total dose in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Will yucca replace ventilation?add
No. Ventilation and litter management are the foundation that decides how much ammonia forms at all and how quickly it is removed from the house. Yucca and saponins are an additive that supports this set-up, not one that replaces it. The best results come from combining good ventilation, dry litter and a well-chosen additive.
Is yucca extract safe for poultry?add
Many yucca preparations are registered as feed additives in the European Union and, when used in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations, are regarded as safe for poultry. The key is sticking to the dose — a natural origin doesn’t mean you can give as much as you like. It’s worth checking a given product in the EU feed additives register.
